Impossible 3D Space: Depth Illusions on a Flat Screen

A flat display cannot provide true volumetric depth, but perspective, scale, occlusion, contrast, motion, and coordinate transforms can make the perceived space feel vastly larger than the physical screen.

Monocular cues carry most of the illusion

Linear perspective, relative scale, occlusion, atmospheric falloff, texture gradients, and contrast changes all imply distance without stereoscopic hardware. Combining several compatible cues is much stronger than exaggerating one in isolation.

Motion parallax makes space feel inhabited

When nearby structure moves faster across the screen than distant structure, the visual system reads layered depth. Procedural scenes can synthesize this continuously without storing a large modeled world.

Inversion breaks ordinary scale

Coordinate inversion maps points near the center toward large transformed distances and distant points back inward. Blending ordinary perspective with inversion can create chambers that appear to fold through themselves or switch between inside and outside.

Recursive scale removes a stable ruler

Nested portals, repeated rooms, and self-similar geometry prevent the viewer from assigning one fixed scale to the scene. Slow continuous transitions can make a small form become a room, then a tunnel, without a cut.

Comfort still matters

Strong full-field optic flow can cause visually induced motion sickness. Depth and motion remain user controlled, and Gentle/reduced-motion modes lower the initial intensity rather than assuming every viewer wants maximum vection.
