Op Art, Interference and the Illusion of Movement

Some images appear to move before a single pixel is animated. Op Art exploits contrast, repetition, spatial frequency, and the limits of visual resolution to turn static geometry into a perceptual event.

Contrast creates visual tension

Alternating light and dark bands produce strong edge signals. When those edges are dense, curved, or differently oriented across neighboring regions, the visual system can experience apparent vibration, shimmer, bulging, or depth.

Moiré is an emergent pattern

Overlay two grids, rings, or line families with slightly different spacing or angle and a third, larger-scale pattern appears. In animation, a tiny rotational or scale drift can move the emergent pattern dramatically even when the source layers change only a little.

Rotating discs turn geometry into depth

Experimental moving-image artists used rotating spirals and discs to create pulsation and apparent three-dimensional form. Modern GPU animation extends the same principle by changing phase, scale, color, and geometry continuously rather than relying on a physical turntable.

Realtime graphics remove the fixed composition

A shader can regenerate every pixel from the current time, viewport, and interaction state. The result is not a prerecorded optical effect but a responsive system in which the composition can remain coherent while never repeating exactly.
